Understanding the TSO Approach to Profile Based Development

By Maurice Tanel

“Is my goalie being challenged enough?”

It’s a reasonable question. As a parent, you want your goalie to enjoy training, stay engaged and continue improving. You want their enthusiasm and competitive drive to be encouraged.

At Team Shutout, we share those goals. Our approach to Profile Based Development starts with understanding your goalie—their technical foundation, movement control, training awareness and readiness to learn. This helps us identify their development priorities and provide the instruction and challenge that support their next step.

Understanding the Goalie

Young goalies develop at different rates. Two goalies of the same age or playing level can have different strengths, movement habits and learning needs.

Through regular training repetitions, our coaches assess each goalie’s technical foundation, balance, movement control and understanding. We also observe how they respond to feedback, sustain attention, embrace learning challenges and work with increasing independence.

These observations guide the instruction, drill pace and challenge we provide. A goalie’s profile is a working picture of their development. As they progress, our approach adjusts with them.

Building Toward Greater Challenge

Our approach to Profile Based Development connects the challenge to what the goalie is ready to practise and learn.

As understanding and movement control develop, we progressively increase dynamic pace, power, decision-making and drill complexity. A controlled transition can develop into a transition and save, followed by a rebound response or recovery.

We consistently include slow, controlled movement drills to reinforce the foundational form and functional efficiency goalies need as they challenge themselves at the “edge of control” in dynamic situations.

When a more demanding drill reveals something that needs attention, we return to those movement details. Development involves both building new skills and refining the foundations that support them.

The right challenge might involve moving faster, making a decision or connecting several skills. It might also involve slowing a movement down to improve balance, apply a correction or execute more consistently.

We want competitive reaction supported by the skills to use it effectively. A goalie’s determination to stop the puck is a strength we build on throughout this process.

Progress Parents Can Recognize

Saves provide information, but development also shows up in smaller changes: a more balanced arrival, a controlled recovery, a correction applied or a thoughtful question.

Parents can also notice growing learning habits—a goalie who can explain their focus, recognize an adjustment or keep working through a difficult skill.

Our approach to Profile Based Development helps us recognize these steps, identify what needs attention and guide the next challenge. We want goalies to enjoy learning, strengthen their foundation and develop the skills and awareness to compete with confidence.

Prepare with purpose. Train with intention. Let performance follow.
